Use your existing American Sailing ID

You should already have an ASID from ASA 101. Use that same number for this course and add it in your student portal; do not create another account. If you cannot find your ASID, contact the school. Experienced sailors without an ASID can review the challenge preparation instructions.

Your ASID is separate from an ASA membership purchase. Any applicable membership or certification charges will be explained before purchase.

COURSE OVERVIEW

What this course covers

ASA 103 focuses on the practical skills needed to sail and manage a cruising sailboat in coastal conditions. It is a major step forward for students who want to build toward bareboat cruising and future chartering opportunities.

Students work on seamanship, close-quarters handling, anchoring, safety awareness, and cruising-style decision making under instructor supervision.

PrerequisitesASA 101 and its knowledge and skill competencies are required. The attached ASA standard also requires 24 prior on-water sailing hours. ASA 102 is not required, but we highly recommend it for sail trim and boat handling.
FocusCoastal cruising skills, boat systems awareness, and practical seamanship.
Typical outcomePreparation for further advancement toward ASA 104 and bareboat cruising.

Skills commonly emphasized

  • Departure, return, docking, and line handling in a cruising context
  • Anchoring procedures and cruising seamanship habits
  • Safety procedures, communication, and watchfulness underway
  • Understanding common onboard systems and cruising responsibilities
  • Navigation awareness, situational judgment, and trip planning concepts
  • More independent boat handling and crew leadership practice

ASA 103 is part of the pathway toward ASA 104, which in turn may support later application for an International Proficiency Certificate through American Sailing.
