Find a class

Compare courses and tuition, then choose a published class. Published sessions show current seat availability. ASA 101, 102 and 103 combine classroom instruction with practical sailing in the Port of Los Angeles and surrounding waters. Each published session specifies its classroom delivery format, dates, times and meeting arrangements. ASA 104 departs Terminal Island for a multi-day live-aboard cruise with two nights at Catalina Island. If you're just starting out, ASA 101 is an American Sailing introductory certification course designed for beginners.

02

Register

Select a published class and choose Register to enroll online. Enter the participant's information, review the total charges, included materials, student terms and cancellation policy, then complete secure payment. You do not need to sign in to the student portal before enrolling.

Additional pass-through costs: Required textbooks and the ASA logbook are purchased separately from tuition; applicable ASA membership or certification fees may also apply. These third-party costs are passed through at the school’s cost, without markup. Textbooks may be bought from the school or an online retailer. School-supplied items and applicable ASA charges will be itemized before purchase. Students normally purchase their ASA logbook when enrolling in ASA 101, then keep and bring that same logbook for all later courses and sea-time entries. Buy a replacement only if it is lost.

Enrollment is confirmed only after payment is verified.

03

Check your email

After your payment is confirmed, you'll receive your course information, payment confirmation, and private electronic waiver link. Check your spam folder if you don't see it.

04

Sign your waiver

All adult students must review and electronically sign the required liability waiver before participating. Signing links typically expire after 14 days; contact the school if yours expires.

05

Get ready to sail

New ASA 101 students without an ASID should register for a free American Sailing ID before class. For ASA 102, 103 and 104, use your existing ASID from ASA 101; do not register again. Challenge candidates without an ASID should follow the challenge preparation instructions. Enter your ASID in the student portal. Buy the required textbook from the school or online and review it before the first class. An ASA logbook is required for certifications and sea time: buy it once and reuse it for future courses unless lost.

Follow the meeting instructions in your confirmation email. Bring comfortable layers, sun protection, water, and non-marking footwear. Your instructor will review the safety plan before departure.

AFTER CERTIFICATION

Your next sailing opportunities

American Sailing certification is a progressive pathway. ASA 101 establishes the fundamentals, ASA 103 develops coastal cruising skills, and ASA 104 prepares sailors for bareboat cruising. ASA 102 is not a prerequisite for ASA 103 or ASA 104; we highly recommend it after ASA 101 for correct sail trim, boat balance, and power control. After earning all three, graduates may apply directly to American Sailing for an International Proficiency Certificate (IPC). Whether an IPC is accepted for a particular charter depends on the operator and destination.
