Bring your ASA logbook

Students normally purchase their ASA logbook when enrolling in ASA 101. Keep that same logbook for all later ASA courses, certifications and sea-time entries; a new logbook is not needed for each course. Bring your existing logbook. Purchase a replacement only if it is lost.

Use your existing American Sailing ID

You should already have an ASID from ASA 101. Use that same number for this course and add it in your student portal; do not create another account. If you cannot find your ASID, contact the school. Experienced sailors without an ASID can review the challenge preparation instructions.

Your ASID is separate from an ASA membership purchase. Any applicable membership or certification charges will be explained before purchase.

COURSE OVERVIEW

What this course covers

ASA 102 builds on the basics and gives students more time working the boat in a practical, hands-on way. It is a strong next step for students who want to improve their sailing confidence before moving into coastal cruising.

The course emphasizes control, teamwork, sail trim awareness, and a better understanding of how the boat responds to wind, helm input, and crew actions.

PrerequisitesASA 101 is required. ASA 102 is not a prerequisite for ASA 103 or ASA 104.
FocusBoat handling, crew coordination, and more active sail management.
Typical outcomeMore confidence and preparation for higher-level sailing instruction.

Skills commonly emphasized

  • Refining points of sail and sail trim concepts
  • Improved tacking, jibing, and coordinated crew movement
  • More confidence at the helm under a range of conditions
  • Line handling, winch work, and cockpit organization
  • Situational awareness and better understanding of boat balance
  • Developing judgment through repeated practical exercises

We highly recommend ASA 102 after ASA 101. It develops sail shape, trim-control use, balance, and power management—the missing link we see between basic sailing and confident cruising. This school recommendation is separate from ASA’s prerequisites; ASA 102 is not required for ASA 103 or ASA 104.
